Interstate Moving Tips for Moving Your Pets

Interstate moving away from North Bay Village is hectic, yet exciting. If you’re moving out of state, you’re probably taking your furry friends with you. If you own a dog or a cat, transporting the animal adds a new challenge to your move. These interstate moving tips can help you plan a stress-free move for yourself and your dogs or cats.

    1) Decide how you’re transporting your pet well in advance of the move.

Taking animals on airplanes can be risky, but you can definitely bring them in the car with you. You can avoid last-minute hassles by figuring out in advance how you’re going to bring your cat or dog to your new home.

    2) Consider microchipping your pet.

If you have an indoor-outdoor cat, or your dog tends to wander off into the neighborhood, your pet might be at greater risk of getting lost in your new location. Along with up to date ID tags with contact information, you may want to consider getting a tracking chip implanted. They’re easy and painless to implant, and they’re the best way to find your animal if they get lost. While you’re at the vet, you should also make sure their vaccinations are up to date. Some states may require proof of immunization.

    3) Put together a travel bag with pet supplies.

Make sure you have enough water and food to last your trip. If you’re moving out of state, you might be doing a lot of driving. However, you might not want to feed them right before the trip, to avoid motion sickness. You should also bring treats, materials for cleaning up their waste, and other useful items. Many cats hate riding in the car. If your cat might become anxious or agitated during the trip, you may want to talk to your vet about safe, natural sedatives that are available for cats. They may also be able to prescribe safe doses of stronger sedatives like Benadryl or prozac.

    4) If you’re moving a cat, get a large cat carrier.

The little carrier you use to bring them to the vet might not be well suited for an extended car trip for interstate moving. You might want to invest in a sizeable carrier with room for them to stand up, move around, and sleep comfortably. This is also relevant for small dogs.

    5) Book a pet friendly hotel in advance.

If you’re driving far enough that you’ll need to stop overnight, try to book a hotel in advance, so you can be sure that pet-friendly accommodations will be available for you.

    6) Make sure they take a bathroom break with you.

When you stop at rest areas, you can bring your dog or cat outside to use the bathroom comfortably. If you have a cat, you may want to consider leash training them before your move.
