    Buying Insurance for Nationwide Moving

If you’re planning a nationwide move you may want to consider buying moving insurance. Moving insurance policies help you make sure that if a valuable item is damaged accidentally during the move, you’ll be reimbursed for its true value. While nationwide movers will compensate you for part of the cost, they’re not legally liable for all of it. For that reason, it’s a good idea to invest in an insurance policy for your move.

How Liable Is Your Moving Company?

Moving companies are regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). According to FCMSA regulations, moving companies are liable for part of the value of the goods they transport. However, this might not cover the whole value.

Some of the types of valuations that nationwide moving companies offer include:

    • Complete value protection. This type of valuation coverage will compensate you for property that is lost, damaged, or destroyed, as well as paying for repairs or replacement. There are usually minimum coverage amounts and deductibles for this.
    • Assessed value protection. Assessed value protection works well for goods that are not particularly heavy, but are valuable. Instead of being based on weight, it’s based on cost. For a specified amount, you can purchase a certain amount of coverage.
    • Declared value protection based on weight. This form of valuation means the moving company will weigh your possessions, then multiply that weight by a particular amount per pound.

Moving company contracts offer further details about what they are or are not liable for. Some contracts will state that the company is not liable for any damages that occur during transit, or that damage is not covered if you packed your belongings yourself.

Keep in mind that any valuation packages offered by a moving company are not insurance policies per se, and are not governed by the same laws and regulations.

Moving Insurance Coverage for Nationwide Moving

Moving insurance helps you safeguard the value of your belongings, ensuring that you’ll be reimbursed for things that were damaged if your moving company is not liable for them.

You may be able to get additional insurance coverage, beyond what the moving company can provide, through your homeowner’s insurance or renter’s insurance. Most homeowner’s insurance politics will cover around 10% of the value of your personal property for breakage or theft during transit. You can also get a trip transit policy, or a special “floater” policy that covers specific valuables like jewelry or fine art.
