5 Tips for Out of State Moving to a Colder Climate
Pompano Beach enjoys one of the warmest climates in the continental United States. It’s practically tropical, and there’s not much seasonal variation. However, this isn’t the case in most areas, and the majority of locations in the United States deal with much colder winters. If you’re getting ready for out of state moving to someplace much further north, it’s essential that you prepare yourself for the radically different climate.
You Need to Prepare Your Car for Cold & Snow
In colder climates with snowy winters, you’ll need to prepare your car. You may need snow tires, de-icing equipment, and different windshield wiper fluid designed for cold weather. Also, a working heating system isn’t just optional when it’s that cold outside. It can be a matter of life and death, and you’re absolutely going to need it.
You Need to Heat Your Home Effectively
You’ll also need to heat your home well. At the farthest northern reaches of the US, like northern Michigan and northern Maine, it’s not uncommon for people to choose not to have central air conditioning. That sounds insane if you’re from the Miami area, but up there, summers are cool enough that AC is only needed for a week or two out of the year. But at the same time, furnaces and boilers are essential. Not only does it keep you warm, and safe from hypothermia, but it stops your pipes from freezing.
You Need to Winterize Your Home
Winterization is more involved, up north. You’ll need to check your doors and windows each year for areas where drafts could get in, make sure the attic has insulation, and shut off outdoor faucets to prevent pipes from freezing. You’ll also need to keep your roof gutters clean, so snow melt can drip away, and so water doesn’t sit in the drainage pipes and freeze.
Invest in Winter Clothing
You’ll need to invest in warm winter clothing that keeps you safe from hypothermia and frostbite. If you’re moving to a really cold climate, warmth often trumps fashion. You might need things you didn’t think of, for truly frigid winters, like long underwear and snow boots. It’s a good idea to buy winter clothes in advance.
Cold Weather Takes Some Getting Used To
If you’ve been living in Pompano Beach for a long time, cold air temperatures can take some time to get used to. Until your body adjusts, being outside in the winter might be really uncomfortable for you, even with adequate winter clothes.
